Off-stream storage provides many of the same benefits to streamflow as rainwater catchment systems do – reducing reliance on dry season water in favor of storing water when it is most available. However, it should be noted that there are some major differences between the two practices. Most notably, diverting surface water or storing water for longer than 30 days requires a water right.
